Maybe my thumb isn't black after all!

So anyone who has done the whole summer sales thing knows you can only take what you can fit in your car... meaning not much. One of the first things to get scratched off of the list when space is tight is decorations. Anyway, I was especially lean in regards to my packing this year (for the sole reason of being sick of hauling stuff from one end of the country to the other). I was thinking about some things I could do to decorate after I got here and I remembered an awesome centerpiece my mother-in-law made at Easter out of wheat grass.

So I found these seeds, or "wheat berries" at Whole Foods a few weeks back. They were in the bulk foods section. I made a trip with some friends out here to IKEA and bought a cute little tin to grow them in. After throwing in some potting soil and a little bit of ribbon, the whole project cost less than $5. Here's how it turned out:

I didn't have a whole lot of hope since usually everything I try to grow dies, but my wheat grass is growing out of control! Hard to believe, but this picture was taken 8 days after "planting" the seeds. It's pretty much the lowest maintenence plant I've ever seen and it's instant gratification since it grows so dang fast. Too bad I'm not a fan of wheat grass juice-- but at least it looks cool! I learned how to do everything from this Web site. Try it out-- it's a whole lot cuter than fake ivy ;)

Hi Jenny! You are so gang cute. I just love reading your blogs! I am definitely going to try out the wheat grass thing. Lincoln would love to watch it grow. I sure miss the thought of not being away this summer. Don't have to much fun without us.

Love it, maybe I could actually keep that alive too. I kill everything somehow. Even though I try so hard.

Where are you guys going to go for school in the fall?

Ok, you've inspired me. Once my house is put back together I'm growing flats of that! It's awesome. Maybe I will learn to enjoy the healthful benefits of shots of wheat grass, or maybe I'll just look at it because it's pretty :) Good work!

Way cool! I would have never thought to do that. I just look at my mom's and think aw that's pretty! Too much work. But not really I am just lazy I guess!

A few weeks ago my nieces and I tried to grow grass heads, and all I got was 2 pieces of grass growing out the bottom of their heads. I need help. Maybe I should try wheat grass. That is awesome. Hope you're having a great time in Penn.

That's funny about trying to fit everything in one car!! I didn't think we'd be able to do it, when we came out here for the summer to sell. I don't think there was room in our car for a pencil! We had it packed tight, and couldn't even see out our back windows!!! Needless to say, our apt. is pretty bare. Maybe I should grow a cute plant like you!!
